FAQ

FAQs

These questions come up often — we’ve answered them here to help you get oriented and decide what kind of support might be helpful.

How do you decide which tutor is the right fit for my child? The first step is narrowing by subject and logistics. For example, if you’re looking for physics support, Aden is our physics tutor. We also consider whether tutoring will be virtual or in person, and which tutors serve your location. If more than one tutor is a good fit at that point, Lily will talk with you about your student’s specific needs, concerns, and learning style to help identify a strong match. Family budget can also play a role in tutor selection, and we’re transparent about that throughout the process.

How do we get started, and what does the intake process look like? All families begin with a brief 15–30 minute free consultation with Lily. This conversation helps clarify what’s going on, what kind of support might be helpful, and whether tutoring or Executive Function support is the best next step. After that consult, Lily will recommend a tutor if academic support is appropriate and connect your family directly for scheduling. If Executive Function support may be helpful, Lily will share a separate link to schedule a longer 45-minute consultation with M. This allows that conversation to be more focused and thorough. Not every student needs both kinds of support, and no decisions are required during the initial consult.

Do you offer virtual tutoring, in-person tutoring, or both? We offer both virtual and in-person tutoring for math, writing, and physics. In-person tutoring is limited to Baltimore and Howard County, and availability depends on subject and tutor. Executive Function support is offered exclusively virtually. This allows us to work with students in the environments where they actually manage their time, assignments, and responsibilities.

How long are sessions, and how often do students usually meet? Math, writing, and physics tutoring sessions are typically one hour, and most students meet weekly. SAT tutoring sessions range from one to two hours, depending on how close the exam date is, and students may meet weekly or more frequently. Executive Function support meets for a total of 75 minutes per week, typically broken into 2–3 shorter sessions. The exact structure and frequency are determined directly with M on a case-by-case basis and depend on the student’s needs, goals, and capacity. This flexibility allows support to fit realistically into a student’s week rather than adding pressure.

How long do students usually work with a tutor? Students usually work with a tutor until they feel self-sufficient in the course. A physics student may meet for the duration of the class, while a math student may meet for one exam, one semester, or across multiple courses. SAT students typically work with a tutor until their exam date. Executive Function students establish goals with M and conclude support once those goals are met.

What subjects and grade levels do you support? We support students from 6th grade through early college in math and physics. Writing support is available for 6th grade and up, and adults are welcome. Executive Function support is designed for students who have agency over their responsibilities, which usually means high school and up. Adults are also welcome.

How does Executive Functioning support fit in with academic tutoring? Executive Function support can stand alone for students who understand the academic material but struggle with execution, organization, or follow-through. It can also complement academic tutoring, particularly when students are overwhelmed and having trouble engaging with their coursework. In those cases, working on academics and executive functioning simultaneously can help students regain traction.

Do you work with students who are neurodivergent or have learning differences? Yes. Students who are neurodivergent or have learning differences are typically matched with more experienced tutors who can provide targeted, thoughtful support. Lily will talk with both parents and students to clarify needs before recommending a tutor.

Do you coordinate directly with teachers or schools? At this time, Lily’s Tutoring Services does not have the capacity to contact teachers or schools directly. We do, however, strongly encourage families to gather information from teachers or schools when possible. The more context we have about where a student is struggling, the easier it is for us to support them effectively.

What if my child resists tutoring or feels overwhelmed? This is a difficult situation, and it’s more common than many families expect. When students resist tutoring or feel overwhelmed, our first step is to understand what’s actually getting in the way. We are tutors, not psychologists, and we don’t diagnose learning differences. We do offer Executive Function support to help students work through overwhelm and build ways to engage with their responsibilities. Our tutors are kind, patient, and committed to treating students like people while still keeping the focus on doing the work. If a student is consistently unwilling or unable to participate productively, we may pause tutoring. We are transparent about progress and do not continue services that are not helping.

Do you offer test prep or short-term support? Yes. We offer both test prep and short-term support. Families are only billed for sessions they actually attend (see our cancellation policy for details). If you only need one session, that’s fine. Our goal is to support students for exactly what they need, whether that’s a brief check-in or longer-term work.
