Algebra is where math
starts building on itself.
Algebra tutoring with Lily’s Tutoring Services is one on one help with the exact course your student is in, so the unit that slipped gets rebuilt before the next one stacks on top of it.
An algebra tutor is a math tutor who stays with one course, and the steps around it, with one student. Each course on the pathway names the tutors who cover it.
Diploma credit. Students must take the MCAP Algebra I.
Diploma credit.
Required for University System of Maryland admission.
After Algebra II, Maryland students take one more course that uses real algebra, such as these four.
Calculus and AP courses sit past the end of this pathway, on the Maryland math tutoring page.
Maryland does not name Algebra II as a diploma requirement. The diploma calls for one credit each in Algebra I and Geometry, a math course in every year of high school, and further credits in courses such as Algebra II. The University System of Maryland goes further and requires Algebra II itself for admission.
The difference matters most to a ninth or tenth grader deciding how far to push in math. A student aiming at a University System of Maryland school, such as UMD College Park or Towson University, needs Algebra II on the transcript, and one who finishes it early still needs another course with real algebra in the final year.

Algebra II is the line for a University System of Maryland application. Shore it up before senior year.
Tell us whether it’s Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II or College Algebra, the unit your student is on, and the last quiz grade. Lily reads it herself and uses it to pick the tutor.
You can also call or text first with a question about the course or the schedule.
Algebra II takes the functions Algebra I introduced and expects the Algebra I skills, and the problem solving skills behind them, to be automatic. A shaky Algebra I unit can surface later as a falling Algebra II grade.
| Topic | Algebra I | Algebra II |
|---|---|---|
| The core idea | Linear functions first, then a first look at quadratic and exponential ones | Whole families of functions: polynomial, rational, exponential and logarithmic |
| Equations | Linear equations, inequalities and systems, then quadratics by factoring | Polynomial, rational and radical equations, and equations with exponents and logs |
| Graphs | Lines, slope and intercepts, then parabolas | Transformations: shifting and stretching a whole family of graphs |
| Numbers and expressions | Exponent rules, square roots and working with polynomials | Complex numbers, rational expressions, sequences and series |
| What it leads to | Geometry and Algebra II | Precalculus, Trigonometry, Statistics or College Algebra |
Lily’s motto is “It’s all about the MATH: Mistakes Allow Thinking to Happen.” Every mistake shows the misunderstanding underneath it, often an earlier algebra step that never settled, and helping students find it is where her approach starts.
A first algebra session starts with a free consult call with Lily, and the first appointment usually lands within 7 to 10 days of that call. Since 2021, more than 50 students have worked with Lily’s team.
Talk it through with Lily. Name the course, the teacher’s pace and the last grade that slipped.
Lily picks the tutor who covers that exact course, in person where one reaches you or online.
Your student brings the current unit, the homework and the last quiz, and the first session works from those pages.
Algebra II students with an SAT date coming up can add SAT prep in Maryland, since the SAT math section leans on the same algebra.
Five tutors help students with algebra, each with their own courses, degree, years of experience and part of the map. Lily picks the tutor for your student after the free consult, matched to the course and to your student’s learning style.

"Lily is a great tutor! Extremely knowledgeable, patient and kind as well as flexible with scheduling. She helped my son with some last minute tutoring to help him pass his 9th grade Algebra class. She worked with us to find times that fit into our schedule and when she was working with my son she explained things clearly and put together excellent notes for him to refer to when needed. He enjoyed working with her. We plan to continue to work with Lily throughout my son’s academic career."
"Lily has been tutoring my 8th grade son in Algebra and it’s made a big difference. He says she explains concepts very clearly. He understands more in 30 minutes with Lily than an hour of class. Lily has been very patient with him. Excellent tutor."
"Lily tutored my daughter in Geometry and was a great help! I would definitely use her again!"
Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and College Algebra
An algebra tutor with Lily’s Tutoring Services costs $75 to $125 an hour, the same online or in person, for tutoring sessions of 1, 1.5 or 2 hours. Each session is paid for on its own, in full before it starts, with no long-term contract.

An algebra tutor with Lily’s Tutoring Services costs $75 to $125 an hour, from Pre-Algebra through Algebra II and College Algebra, and the rate is the same online or in person. Lily gives you the matched tutor’s exact rate on the free consult call.
For homework help from an older student who passed the course a year or two ago, $25 or $30 an hour is a reasonable rate. Every algebra tutor Lily matches holds at least a bachelor’s degree and covers your student’s exact course, so our rates start higher, at $75 an hour. If cost decides it, begin with the free homework help your county library offers.
Free algebra help in Maryland is available through the public library. Baltimore County Public Library and the Enoch Pratt Free Library both offer free online homework help through Brainfuse with a library card. Extra help from the math teacher at school is free as well, when the school offers it.
Algebra 2 is not named as a requirement for a Maryland high school diploma. The diploma calls for one credit each in Algebra I and Geometry, a math course in every year of high school, and further credits in courses such as Algebra II. Algebra II itself is required for admission to the University System of Maryland, which includes UMD College Park and Towson University.
Maryland students take the MCAP Algebra I assessment, and taking it is a condition of earning the high school diploma. Ask your student’s school counselor how the result is used for their own graduating class.
The University System of Maryland requires four years of high school math, including Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II. A student who finishes Algebra II early also needs a final-year course that uses real algebra, such as Trigonometry, Precalculus, Calculus, Statistics or College Algebra.
Algebra 2 tutoring runs online with Aden N., Osrick A. or Audrey G., on a shared whiteboard that keeps every step of the working visible to both people. Online algebra tutoring reaches any town in Maryland. Sarah M. works in person only.
In person algebra tutoring reaches Howard County with Aden N., Bowie with Osrick A., Mays Chapel with Audrey G., and west Baltimore County and northeastern Howard County with Sarah M. Everywhere else in Maryland, from Baltimore, MD to the Eastern Shore, Aden N., Osrick A. and Audrey G. work with students through online tutoring.
Middle school students get Pre-Algebra help from Aden N. and Audrey G., and an early Algebra I course is covered by Aden N., Sarah M., Osrick A. and Audrey G. Elementary school math is available by request.
College Algebra is covered by Aden N., Sarah M., Osrick A. and Audrey G., at the same $75 to $125 an hour as high school algebra. A college student brings the syllabus and the graded exams so far, so each session follows the professor’s own course.
We don’t provide worksheets or practice problems. Your student brings the material from their own algebra class, the homework, the notes and the last quiz, and the tutor brings the strategy for making sense of it.
A student needs an algebra tutor when the homework starts taking far longer than it used to, when quiz grades fall while the studying stays the same, or when the steps make sense in class and vanish at home. Lily’s approach starts by finding the earlier misunderstanding the current unit is built on.
Bring the course name and the last quiz, and Lily will go over where the unit stands.
