The roster

The tutors your student could be matched with.

Every Maryland tutor on our roster is listed by first name and last initial for privacy. Between them they cover a wide range of subjects and bring classroom and tutoring experience with students with learning differences. Lily matches on more than subject: grade level, learning style, and the personality that actually keeps your student engaged.

We're growing this roster. If you're a tutor in Maryland, we have tutoring jobs in Baltimore and across the state, and we'd love to hear from you.

6 years in the classroom, 20 years tutoring
Rose S. · she/her
Online only

AP math specialist.

Rose has spent more than ten years in classrooms and more than fifteen years tutoring, and patience is the thing she leads with. She adjusts how she explains a concept to fit the student in front of her, and in tutoring she can slow down until it genuinely lands. Questions are welcome, and she wants students to feel safe asking them. Her view is that with the right support, students can master new math topics instead of just surviving them. Away from math she reads, walks, and works on art projects, currently cross stitch and embroidery.

Aden N. · she/her
Online, and in person in Howard County

Aden has been tutoring math on and off since she was fifteen, including stints at Howard Community College and UMD College Park. She has worked with students on the autism spectrum and with students who have ADHD, dyscalculia, and dyslexia, and she says she has yet to meet a student she could not work with. Her approach leans on mistakes: she would sooner have a student try something and see what happens than wait to be handed the right answer. Most of them turn out to know more than they thought, and what was missing was the confidence to start. She reads constantly and plays guitar.

Sarah M. · she/her
In-person: West Baltimore County & NE Howard County

Geometry specialist.

Sarah came to tutoring from the public school classroom, where she worked with students who have ADHD and dyscalculia and with students whose first language is not English. Her take is that with the right supports in place, students with all kinds of learning needs do well, and that they tend to surprise themselves once someone gives them the time and attention. One-on-one is where she thinks the real progress happens. Outside of math she minored in Mandarin Chinese and has a five-year unbroken Spanish streak on Duolingo.

How matching works

A person picks your tutor.
Here is how.

Tutor's tote bag packed with notebooks and a protractor for a Lily's Tutoring Services session in central Maryland
01

You tell us about your student

Who your student is, how they learn, and what hasn't worked so far. A free consult call, no obligation.

02

Lily makes the match

She picks the tutor whose strengths and personality fit what you told us, then tells you who and why.

03

You meet your tutor

Most families sit down with their new tutor inside a week or ten days. If the fit isn't right, tell us and we'll re-match.

How we choose our tutors

Knowing the subject is the easy part. Making it click is the job.

Plenty of people can solve for x. Far fewer can make it click for a student who’s decided they’re just bad at math. We select for both, and Lily oversees who joins the roster.

Hand-labeled Algebra, Geometry, Writing and SAT binders kept by Lily's Tutoring Services tutors in Maryland
  • Real subject depth. Tutors work in the courses they know cold, from Pre-Algebra to AP and college-level material.
  • They can actually explain it. We choose tutors who get to the why, meet a student where they are, and stay patient when it takes another pass.
  • Personality fit matters. A shy middle schooler and a driven senior need different energy. Lily factors that in, because a student who likes their tutor shows up ready to work.
  • A small, known roster. Lily built this team herself and stands behind every name on it, and if a first pairing misses, she makes it right.

"Rose, from Lily’s Tutoring Services, did a great job helping our son pass a math class required for a University of Maryland College Park Limited Enrollment Program. He needed a certain grade and working with Rose over four sessions got him there. He’s clear that he would not have made it without the extra instruction. Rose was flexible, responsive, friendly and effective."

"Lily is so very helpful to my son Jonathan, since she started tutoring him in calculus he has maintained an A average. He does not only help him academically, she also looks at his social skills and how he is doing in his other classes. She advises Jonathan and me and his mother on strategies that could benefit Jonathan in his education. I 100% recommend Lily as a tutor and mentor for students and a helper for parents."

Lily is a great tutor! Extremely knowledgeable, patient and kind as well as flexible with scheduling. She helped my son with some last minute tutoring to help him pass his 9th grade Algebra class. She worked with us to find times that fit into our schedule and when she was working with my son she explained things clearly and put together excellent notes for him to refer to when needed. He enjoyed working with her. We plan to continue to work with Lily throughout my son’s academic career.

We have been using Lily’s Tutoring for the past two school years to help the grandson with math. The attention is personalized to his needs and Ms. Rose has been flexible in the sometimes changing schedule from the teenager and the AACPS system. Lily’s has helped turn the grade around from failing to passing and increased the basic understanding of the subject. I would recommend this service to anyone in need of tutoring.

Lily has been tutoring my 8th grade son in Algebra and it’s made a big difference. He says she explains concepts very clearly. He understands more in 30 minutes with Lily than an hour of class. Lily has been very patient with him. Excellent tutor.

Lily did an amazing job of meeting my son where he was and getting him where he needed to be. She’s positive but realistic, talks a lot about the “why” and intrinsic motivation, and uses humor to keep even the most frustrating subjects lighthearted!

Lily worked with my son in the spring of his junior year as he prepared for the AP Calculus AB exam and the SAT. She was professional, knowledgeable, connected with Natan and engaged him in his learning. She definitely boosted his content mastery and exam scores for BOTH tests.

My daughter Amanda has had great success with her Statistics class since being tutored by Audrey G. Her grades in the class went from barley passing to B to C grades! Thanks again for all your help!

Lily is a wonderful tutor! She worked expertly with our 6-year-old both on Zoom and in person. Our child looked forward to her sessions with Lily and we often found her practicing what she was learning with her on her own. Lily has a real knack for getting information to stick and was so encouraging of our daughter in each session. We highly recommend her!

Well-used math and writing reference books on a Lily's Tutoring Services tutor's shelf in Maryland
What is the best way to find a tutor?

Start from the course, not the tutor. Work out which class is actually going wrong and how your student learns, then find someone who teaches that specific course and fits how they work. Directories hand you a filtered list and leave the judgement to you; here a person reads what you send and picks from a roster she built, so you get a name and a reason rather than a search result.

Is paying for a tutor worth it?

It depends on why the subject is going wrong. If your student follows the class and just needs practice, free resources may cover it. If the gap sits a unit or two behind what the class is doing now, that is the thing a tutor can find and a classroom has no time to, and it is where the money goes furthest. You can book a single session first and decide from there.

How much do tutors usually charge per hour?

A reasonable price for tutoring per hour depends on the subject and how advanced the work is. Ours start at $75 an hour, and each tutor carries their own rate that you hear before anything is booked. The full breakdown by subject is on the tutoring prices in Maryland page.

How do you choose which tutor my student works with?

Lily reads every intake herself, then hand-picks a tutor based on the subject, the grade level, how your student learns, and personality fit. A real person makes the match, and you’ll know your tutor’s name and the subjects they cover before the first session.

What if the tutor isn’t the right fit?

If the tutor isn’t the right fit, tell us and we’ll re-match your student with someone else on the roster. A good fit is the whole point, so we treat a re-match as part of the job.

How are your tutors vetted?

Every tutor is chosen for two things: real depth in the subjects they tutor, and the ability to explain them so a student actually gets it. Lily tutors students herself, so she knows what a good session looks like, and she makes the call on who joins.

Can I request a specific tutor?

Yes. If a friend recommended someone on our roster, or your student clicked with a tutor before, mention it when you reach out and we’ll match accordingly, subject to that tutor’s availability. Otherwise Lily recommends the tutor she thinks fits best and tells you why.

Are sessions with these tutors online or in person?

Most of our tutors do online tutoring over Zoom, which reaches students across Maryland and beyond. In-person tutoring is available in central Maryland (Baltimore County, Baltimore City, Howard County), depending on each tutor’s schedule. Sarah, one of our tutors, works in person only in specific areas, and we’ll tell you up front what’s possible for your location.

What grade levels and subjects do your tutors cover?

Together our tutors cover a wide range of subjects for students from 6th grade through college: math from Pre-Algebra through AP and college calculus, SAT test prep, writing from middle school through professional work, physics, statistics, Spanish, and our executive functioning track. Elementary school math is available by request. Name the course and we’ll point you to the tutor whose strength is exactly that.

Who is Lily?

Lily Glushakow-Smith is the owner and founder. She founded Lily’s Tutoring Services in 2021 and still tutors students herself in math, statistics, and SAT prep. When you contact us, your message goes to her, not a queue.

What is the Hacking Your Potential track?

It’s our executive functioning program for motivated older teens and adults, led by M G. Instead of a specific subject, it builds the skills underneath every subject: planning, time management, focus, and follow-through, the things that turn a capable-but-scattered student into an organized one.
