We're hiring part time tutors across Maryland to work one on one with 6th through 12th graders, mostly in math. Most of our tutors work remotely, so this can be a work from home job: you tutor online over Zoom from anywhere in the state, on the hours you set. There is in-person work around Baltimore MD too, if you would rather sit at the table. You bring the subject and the patience. We bring the students, the scheduling, the contracts, and the billing.

Is this a remote tutoring job?
Mostly, yes. Most of our tutors work remotely, and online tutoring over Zoom is how a lot of the work happens, so this can be a work from home job from day one. As an online tutor you work from your own desk, on the availability you set, anywhere in the state. If you would rather sit across the table from a student, in-person work runs around Baltimore County, Baltimore City, and Howard County.
One limit is worth knowing before you apply. Tutors are W-2 employees and payroll requires a Maryland address, so remote here means remote within Maryland. Live in the state, tutor entirely online, and you are fine.
The hours are part time by design: at least 2 to 3 hours a week, set by you, so the job fits around a full time job, a graduate program, or a school day. Take on more whenever you want them.
What you'll do

- Provide one-on-one tutoring to middle school and high school students, in person, online, or both
- Focus on math, with writing and other subjects open depending on your background
- Adapt instruction for individual learning needs, including neurodivergent students
- Track session hours and keep accurate records
- Follow the client contract terms on session structure, cancellations, and conduct
- Take paid training to become a certified SAT tutor, if that interests you

Minimum requirements
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant subject area, such as math, education, or a closely related field
- At least one of: prior tutoring experience, classroom teaching experience, or a relevant certification
- Maryland residency, required for payroll
- Reliable availability of at least 2 to 3 hours a week
- For in-person tutors, reliable transportation, since sessions happen at a mix of locations
- Comfort working one on one with middle and high school students
- Reliable internet and a quiet space, for virtual sessions
Nice to have
- Master's degree in a relevant subject area, which qualifies for the higher pay tier
- Teaching certification or formal classroom experience
- Experience with neurodivergent students or students with alternative learning needs
- Background or interest in SAT and standardized test prep
- Experience tutoring more than one subject, such as math plus writing or another STEM subject
- Familiarity with middle and high school math curricula, from Algebra through Pre-Calculus

Lily's Tutoring Services is a Maryland tutoring practice founded in 2021, working with students from 6th grade through college across Baltimore County, Baltimore City, and Howard County, plus virtual sessions statewide. Lily reads every intake herself and hand-picks which tutor fits which student, so you get matched to students who suit how you work.
Our tutors come from classrooms, from university tutoring centers, and from years of one-on-one work. Most of the work sits in middle and high school math, from pre-algebra through Algebra II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus, with SAT prep picking up ahead of each test date. Some students come because a specific unit stopped making sense. Others have been quietly behind for a year and have decided to do something about it. A good number are neurodivergent or have been told they're just not math people, which is usually the thing worth undoing first.
In-person sessions happen around Baltimore County, Baltimore City, and Howard County, at libraries, homes, and other spots that suit the family, so in-person tutors need to be comfortable working in a mix of settings. Virtual sessions run statewide from wherever you are. The tutors who do well here tend to be patient, willing to explain the same idea three different ways, and steady with a student who arrives frustrated. Subject knowledge gets you in the door, and what keeps a student coming back is the sense that someone is in their corner. Most of the job is finding the learning strategies that work for one particular kid, which is what academic success in school and college usually turns on.

Is 50 dollars an hour good for tutoring?
Whether 50 dollars an hour is good for tutoring depends entirely on whether you are employed or working for yourself. A self-employed tutor charging $50 an hour is also paying self-employment tax out of it and spending unpaid hours on marketing, scheduling, invoicing and chasing payment, so the real hourly figure is lower than the number on the invoice. Our tutoring jobs pay $40 an hour with a bachelor's degree and relevant experience and $60 with a master's, as a W-2 employee, with the client acquisition and billing already handled.
How much should I charge for 2 hours of tutoring?
If you are self-employed, work back from what you need to clear per hour after tax and unpaid admin time, then check it against what tutors in your area charge for that subject and level. Specialized work such as SAT prep or AP-level math carries more than general homework help. If you would rather not set rates at all, that is part of what an employed role removes: here the rate is published before you apply.
Which tutoring jobs pay the most?
Two things move tutoring pay more than anything else: your credentials and how specialized the subject is. A master's degree in a relevant subject area moves you to our higher tier at $60 an hour, and subject specialization such as SAT certification can factor in as well. Advanced math and standardized test prep generally pay more than general homework help, because fewer tutors can cover them.
Is there a demand for tutoring?
In our experience, yes, and math is where it concentrates. Most of our work sits in middle school and high school math, with SAT prep picking up ahead of each test date, which is why math is the primary need whenever we are hiring. We can only speak to our own roster, and on it the demand is steady enough that we recruit ahead of it.
Do I have to live in Maryland?
Yes. Tutors are W-2 employees, and payroll requires Maryland residency, so a remote tutoring job here is a remote-within-Maryland job. If you live in the state and tutor online, that works. The residency requirement is about payroll, so it holds even if you never drive to a session.
Is this a contractor role or an employee role?
Employee. Tutors are W-2. The company carries the contracts, the billing, and any client issues, so you never have to sort them out on your own.

Do I need a teaching certificate?
No. You need a bachelor's degree in a relevant subject area and at least one of the following: prior tutoring experience, classroom teaching experience, or a relevant certification. A teaching certificate helps, though we don't require one.
How do I become a tutor in Baltimore, MD?

Math is the primary need, from 6th grade through high school. Writing tutors are welcome too, and other subjects are possible depending on your background.
