A college physics session and a 6th grade math session ask different things of a tutor, so the rate climbs as the coursework gets more advanced. AP and college-level work carries the higher rates in the range.

How much does a private tutor cost in Maryland?

Why do math tutoring rates vary so much?
Two reasons: the level and the tutor. Coaching AP Calculus is a different job from walking a 6th grader through pre-algebra, and our roster spans a range of tutors, which keeps the entry point affordable. Lily quotes the tutor’s exact hourly rate when she recommends them, before you decide anything.
Is SAT prep more expensive than regular subject tutoring?
SAT and test prep is $145 an hour, the same as our AP and calculus rate. The work is different from subject tutoring, with full-length practice tests and exam strategy folded into every plan.
How does executive functioning pricing work?
Executive functioning, our Hacking Your Potential track, is priced by the week rather than the hour: a one-time $150 intake, then from $75 a week for recurring sessions. That rhythm fits the work better than one long block, since the whole point is building habits across the week.
Do I have to buy a package of sessions?
No. Sessions are booked and paid one at a time, so you’re never locked into a block of hours you might not use, which keeps the whole thing low-pressure and easy to start or pause.
Do online and in-person sessions cost the same?
Yes. The price is set by the subject and the tutor, never the format, so a Zoom session costs the same as it would in person. In-person is available in Baltimore County, Baltimore City, and Howard County, depending on each tutor’s schedule.
How does booking and payment work?
Booking opens after your free consult with Lily, straight on your tutor’s calendar. A deposit holds each session and the remainder is invoiced afterward. Cards run through Stripe by default, and Zelle works if you’d rather skip the card. The deposit comes off your total, so it’s never an extra cost.
What is your cancellation policy?
Give at least 8 hours’ notice and the deposit comes back in full; the link we send handles both cancelling and rescheduling. Inside 8 hours the deposit is forfeit, though the first time it happens we waive it. The deposit is only ever about paying your tutor for the time they set aside for your student.
Is there a charge for the first consultation?
No. Every family starts with a free consult with Lily to talk through the subject, the goals, and the fit. You can leave that call without deciding anything.
Are there any hidden costs?
None. The rate is the cost, set before you start. Sign-up fees, materials fees, and session minimums aren’t part of how we bill, and the booking deposit counts toward your session total.
What is a reasonable price for tutoring per hour?
Most private tutoring in the US sits somewhere between $25 and $100 an hour, and the spread is mostly about who is teaching and what they are teaching. Our own tutoring prices start at $75 an hour for middle school through College Algebra and top out at $145 for SAT prep and AP-level math. A reasonable price is one where the tutor knows the course your student is sitting in, whether that’s elementary school arithmetic or college level calculus, and where you got the number before you booked.
Is $75 an hour a lot for tutoring?
For one-on-one work with a degreed tutor, $75 an hour is a normal starting rate, and it’s where ours begins. Group tutoring and homework-help apps cost less because your student shares the hour across several kids. A private session puts an hour of undivided attention on the exact assignment in front of them.
Is $50 an hour good for a tutor?
It depends entirely on the subject and the tutor. $50 an hour is common for a college student tutoring elementary or middle school work, and it’s a fair rate for that. For AP Calculus, SAT prep, or college-level physics you’re paying for someone who has taught that exact course before, and that experience is what moves the rate.
