Is getting a math tutor worth it?
It depends on why the math is going wrong. If your student understands the current unit and just needs reps, free practice online may be enough. If the problem is a gap a unit or two back, a tutor is worth it, because that gap is exactly what a class has no time to go find. You can start with one session and decide from there, since there is no package to commit to.
Is AI replacing math tutors?
Not for the students we work with. AI is useful for checking an answer or getting a worked example at midnight, and we have no problem with students using it that way. What it can't do is watch a student work and notice the real problem sits two units back, or hold them to the plan the following week. That diagnosis and the follow-through are most of what a tutor is for.
How do you know which math level my child actually needs?
It begins on the free consult call, where Lily asks about the course, the grade levels involved, and what's been tried so far. Then the first sessions do the real detective work: as your student solves problems, the tutor can see where the foundation gave way, and it's rarely the unit on the test this week. You hear what we found in plain English, and the plan gets built around your child.
My kid is failing math right now. Can you turn it around?
Often, yes. When the problem is one specific unit, focused sessions can patch it quickly, and some students move to twice a week ahead of finals and other big exams; we'll build a schedule around it. Tell us the timeline on the consult call and we'll be straight with you: real understanding still takes weeks of consistent work, and we'd rather say so up front.
What does a typical math tutoring session look like?
Tutoring sessions run 1, 1.5, or 2 hours, one-on-one. Most begin with the week's homework or the next test, dig into whatever is stuck, work through problems together, and close with a few the student solves on their own. The pace follows your student's learning style, and your tutor brings the practice resources, so nothing depends on what came home in the backpack.
Do you tutor AP Calculus and AP Statistics?
Yes. We tutor AP Calculus AB and BC, AP Precalculus, and AP Statistics, and exam preparation is built into the run-up: practice with exam-style questions, pacing, and the parts of the curriculum the test leans on hardest. IB Math students are covered too.
Can the same tutor cover SAT math too?
Often, yes. SAT prep pairs naturally with math tutoring and test preparation, since the same gaps show up in both places. Mention the SAT and your student's goals during the consult and we'll factor them into the match.
What if my child has math anxiety?
You're describing a lot of the students we meet on day one. A patient tutor who celebrates small wins and keeps sessions lighthearted rebuilds that confidence first, and the math gets easier to face. Tell us during intake and we'll match a tutor who's the right fit for an anxious learner.
How much does a math tutor cost in Maryland?
Math tutoring runs $75 to $125 an hour for middle school through college algebra, and $100 to $145 for AP calculus and above. You'll know your exact rate before you start, and the deposit that holds your spot is refundable with 8 or more hours' notice. Full details are on our pricing page.
Where do you offer in-person math tutoring?
In-person math tutoring is available across central Maryland: Baltimore County, Baltimore City, and Howard County, subject to tutor availability. Everywhere else, online math tutoring runs over Zoom, and Zoom turns out to be a good learning environment for math because the shared whiteboard keeps the working visible. Our online tutoring reaches the rest of Maryland and beyond, from Montgomery County to the Eastern Shore.
