How it works

How does the SAT Program work?

The SAT Program starts with the Front Door SAT class, a 2-hour strategy class plus a full proctored practice test that gives your student the score report every weekly plan is built from. After that it runs as weekly 2-hour sessions with our SAT Team for up to 15 weeks, depending on how far away your student’s test date is. Book a consult with Lily to talk through the test date and the two formats.

  1. Start with the Front Door: Hack the SAT

The first session of the SAT Program: a 2-hour strategy class in a small group on Zoom, led by Lily. Then comes a full proctored practice test and a written score report with recommendations.

    Dates coming soon.
  2. Weekly sessions until test day

From there your student meets our SAT Team once a week for a 2-hour session, for up to 15 weeks, each one targeted to the score report. Homework, midweek study and a weekly practice test fill the days in between.

    Up to 15 weeks
  3. Test day

With a full practice test every week, taken at home in Bluebook or proctored in person, your student walks in on test day having done it many times before.

    A practice test every week

The goal is a test day that feels routine, not scary.

Choose your format

Small group or 1-on-1: which SAT tutoring format fits?

Both SAT tutoring formats use the same method, built from the same score report. What changes is where your student works, who else is at the table and the weekly price.

The SAT Program’s two formats compared: Small Group and 1-on-1
Small Group 1-on-1
Where In person at a Howard County public libraryOn Zoom
Group size Up to 4 students with one tutor, each on their own planJust your student
Session length 2-hour session, weekly2-hour session, weekly
Program length Up to 15 weeksUp to 15 weeks
Method Built from your student’s score reportBuilt from your student’s score report
Price $140 per week$250 per week
Payment plans AvailableAvailable

Both formats start with the Front Door: Hack the SAT, the first session of the SAT Program.

The Small Group fits when

  • You live in or near Howard County and your student can get to a public library once a week.
  • Your student likes a bit of company at the table, and each student works on their own plan.
  • The weekly budget matters: $140 per week against $250 per week.

1-on-1 fits when

  • A weekly drive to Howard County won’t work, since every session runs on Zoom.
  • Your student gets the most out of a 2-hour session where every question on the table is theirs.
  • Your student would rather talk a missed question through out loud without an audience.

Pick the format your student will keep showing up for, week after week.

Ask about the SAT Program

Tell us your student’s SAT test date.

Send the SAT test date your student is aiming at, their grade, and whether they have a Bluebook score report yet. If you already lean toward the Small Group or 1-on-1, say so.

You can also book a consult with Lily to talk through the test date and the two formats, and to ask about payment plans.

Inside a session

What happens in a 2-hour SAT tutoring session?

A 2-hour SAT tutoring session starts from your student’s own score report and works through official College Board practice picked for them.

A graphing calculator resting on a spiral notebook of handwritten math problems, with a mug and a pencil on a wooden desk

It starts from the score report

We start from your student’s own Bluebook score report, not a generic curriculum, and practice is targeted to that report.

Official College Board practice

Practice is chosen for each student from official College Board questions. College Board writes them; our SAT Team picks the ones your student needs that week.

Why the wrong answer looked right

When a question goes wrong, we explain why the wrong answer was tempting, to help students stop falling for it.

Two tries, then out loud

Your student tries a missed question twice on their own, then talks it through out loud.

Test-taking strategy starts in the Front Door: Hack the SAT class, with strategies your student can use on test day or bring into weekly SAT test prep with our SAT Team.

For academic tutoring in a school math class, from pre-algebra through calculus, see our math tutor in Maryland page.

Between sessions

What does your student do between sessions?

Between SAT tutoring sessions your student keeps working at home, and every week the homework gets checked and graded.

  • Graded homework every week. The digital SAT has two sections, Reading and Writing, and Math. Reading and Math homework is assigned, checked and graded every week.
  • Midweek independent study. Studying on their own in the middle of the week keeps the practice going on the days there’s no session.
  • A full practice test every week. It’s taken at home in Bluebook or proctored in person, and by test day your student has sat enough full practice tests that the real one feels routine.

Cost and length

What does SAT tutoring cost, and for how long?

SAT tutoring in the SAT Program costs $140 per week in the Small Group and $250 per week 1-on-1, for one 2-hour session a week, and the Program runs for up to 15 weeks.

Program length depends on the time until your student's test date. Payment plans are available, so ask about them during your consult with Lily. A family that wants a proctored SAT practice test first can sit one on its own.

Small Group $140 per week
1-on-1 $250 per week

Rates for every other subject, and our cancellation policy, are on our Maryland tutoring prices page.

"Lily is a great tutor! Extremely knowledgeable, patient and kind as well as flexible with scheduling. She helped my son with some last minute tutoring to help him pass his 9th grade Algebra class. She worked with us to find times that fit into our schedule and when she was working with my son she explained things clearly and put together excellent notes for him to refer to when needed. He enjoyed working with her. We plan to continue to work with Lily throughout my son’s academic career."

Lily worked with my son in the spring of his junior year as he prepared for the AP Calculus AB exam and the SAT. She was professional, knowledgeable, connected with Natan and engaged him in his learning. She definitely boosted his content mastery and exam scores for BOTH tests.

Lily has been tutoring my 8th grade son in Algebra and it’s made a big difference. He says she explains concepts very clearly. He understands more in 30 minutes with Lily than an hour of class. Lily has been very patient with him. Excellent tutor.

Lily is so very helpful to my son Jonathan, since she started tutoring him in calculus he has maintained an A average. He does not only help him academically, she also looks at his social skills and how he is doing in his other classes. She advises Jonathan and me and his mother on strategies that could benefit Jonathan in his education. I 100% recommend Lily as a tutor and mentor for students and a helper for parents.

Lily is a wonderful tutor! She worked expertly with our 6-year-old both on Zoom and in person. Our child looked forward to her sessions with Lily and we often found her practicing what she was learning with her on her own. Lily has a real knack for getting information to stick and was so encouraging of our daughter in each session. We highly recommend her!

Lily did an amazing job of meeting my son where he was and getting him where he needed to be. She’s positive but realistic, talks a lot about the “why” and intrinsic motivation, and uses humor to keep even the most frustrating subjects lighthearted!

Payment plans are available, and the consult with Lily is where you ask about them. Math, writing and other subjects are listed on our tutoring prices in Maryland page.

Small group or 1-on-1: which SAT tutoring format is right?

Small group and one-on-one SAT tutoring use the same method, so the choice comes down to where your student works best, their learning style, and what fits your budget. The Small Group meets in person at a Howard County public library, up to 4 students with one tutor, each on their own plan, for $140 per week. 1-on-1 runs on Zoom with just your student for $250 per week.

How many students are in the SAT small group?

The SAT Program's Small Group has up to 4 students with one tutor, each on their own plan, and each plan starts from that student's own score report. 1-on-1 on Zoom is just your student, for the whole 2-hour session.

How long is the SAT Program?

The SAT Program runs for up to 15 weeks of weekly 2-hour sessions. Program length depends on the time until your student's test date. SAT test preparation for a test months away uses more of those weeks than one coming up soon, and the Program starts with the Front Door: Hack the SAT.

Does my student need a score report?

Yes, every student in the SAT Program needs a Bluebook score report, because the weekly plan is built from it. The full proctored practice test in the Front Door: Hack the SAT provides one, along with a written score report with recommendations.

How much homework is there?

Homework in the SAT Program is weekly: Reading and Math assignments that are checked and graded, plus midweek independent study between sessions. There's also a full practice test every week, at home in Bluebook or proctored in person.

Do you use official SAT practice questions?

Yes, the SAT Program uses official College Board practice, chosen for each student from their score report. College Board writes those questions, and our SAT Team picks which ones your student works on each week.

Who tutors the SAT Program?

The SAT Program is tutored by our SAT Team, tutors trained in Lily's approach to the test. Lily hosts the consult, leads the Front Door: Hack the SAT strategy class and hosts the optional review call that goes over the score report.

Where does the small group meet?

The SAT Program's Small Group meets in person at a Howard County public library, with up to 4 students with one tutor, each on their own plan. Each 2-hour session runs weekly. 1-on-1 sessions run on Zoom instead, with just your student.

Is the SAT Program for the digital SAT?

Yes, the SAT Program prepares students for the digital SAT only, the version taken in College Board's Bluebook app. How that test is built, and whether Maryland requires it, is covered on our SAT prep in Maryland page.

Are payment plans available?

Yes, payment plans are available for the SAT Program. Ask about them during your consult with Lily, and bring your student's test date. Program length depends on the time until your student's test date.

What is your cancellation policy?

Lily’s Tutoring Services publishes its cancellation policy with our tutoring prices in Maryland. Read it there before you book, and bring any question about how it applies to the SAT Program to your consult with Lily.

How do we get started?

The SAT Program starts with Front Door: Hack the SAT, our Front Door SAT class and the Program's first session, then moves into the weekly sessions. Class dates for the Front Door: Hack the SAT are coming soon, so book a consult with Lily to talk through your student's test date and which format fits.

Is SAT tutoring worth it?

SAT tutoring is worth it when the SAT is part of a student's college readiness plan: a test date that matters for admissions, some weeks to work with, and a student willing to do the weekly practice, because the SAT Program is built on that weekly work. We don't promise a score. What the SAT Program gives your student is a plan built from their own score report, graded homework and a full practice test every week.

Your next step

Bring the test date. Lily will talk you through the weeks from there.

Talk through your student’s test date and the two formats with Lily. The SAT Program itself starts with the Front Door: Hack the SAT, then weekly SAT tutoring in the Small Group or 1-on-1.
